Topical Authority Case Study

Does Topical Authority Work? Three Live Sites Gave Three Different Answers

Yes, topical authority can work. Our own sites show that it comes from clear ownership and real assets, not from publishing a mountain of pages.

Topical Authority: results, limits and next checks

Published comparison ... observational, not causal
Starting Condition

Before the Topical Authority work

Three owned sites had deliberately built a subject cluster. One fixed ownership around a live tool and original data. One split a broad subject into clearer page jobs. One published a large directory with deep local structure.

Intervention

What changed in Topical Authority

The named interventions are AISymantix events 526, 528, and 534 on September 7; AItoAIDatasets event 727 on September 17; and the RealSEOLife directory build beginning with event 938 on September 22 and finishing its first quality round with event 1133 on September 27.

Result

What the Topical Authority results show

AISymantix produced the strongest visibility and position gain. AItoAIDatasets improved position while losing impressions and earning no clicks. The RealSEOLife directory gained its first visibility but remained almost absent from search.

Search Console

What Google reported for Topical Authority

The charts use gsc_page_daily from the live Digital Karma Data Warehouse. Page groups were limited to the exact cluster routes named in the method. Whole-site totals were not used to call a winner or loser.

Server Logs

What the Topical Authority server logs recorded

Server logs were not used to explain ranking movement. Bot retrieval can confirm access. It cannot prove human demand, indexing, citation, or ranking cause.

Limits

What the Topical Authority results do not prove

This is not a controlled test. AISymantix received more than one round of work. The sites have different histories, competition, and time since publication. The directory is still young. Search Console position movement does not establish that topical authority caused the change.

Current Status

Where Topical Authority stands now

Topical authority remains a working strategy, but page volume is no longer accepted as a substitute for subject ownership or an original asset.

Next Checkpoint

What we will measure next for Topical Authority

Recheck the same route groups after another complete period. Watch whether AISymantix turns visibility into clicks, whether AItoAIDatasets holds its position improvement, and whether more RealSEOLife directory pages begin appearing without another expansion.

Measurement Frame

What we measured for Topical Authority

Three cluster readings from the live warehouse. The current period is the same across all three sites; the earlier period ends immediately before each named intervention.

Focused ownership won
6,823 to 12,620 impressions
AISymantix: 1 to 3 clicks; position 66.54 to 40.12

Clearer page jobs, a working checker, and first-party data produced the strongest change in the set.

Better position, smaller audience
1,000 to 570 impressions
AItoAIDatasets: zero clicks; position 45.44 to 20.08

The connected sprint became more competitive without becoming a visibility or click win.

Volume did not buy authority
0 to 10 impressions
RealSEOLife: 1 of 1,973 directory URLs visible; zero clicks

The biggest build in the comparison produced the smallest search response. It remains early, but page count did not create the result.

Impressions show search exposure, not readership or revenue. Weighted position is the impression-weighted average for the measured route group.

Summary

Topical Authority: the short version

The AISymantix search visibility cluster grew after we gave the subject clearer owners, a working checker, and first-party data. The AItoAIDatasets cluster moved much closer to page one but lost total visibility and earned no clicks. The RealSEOLife real estate directory published nearly two thousand URLs and barely registered. The strongest result came from owning the question, not filling the site.

Plain English

Topical Authority in plain English

One site gained visibility, rankings, and clicks. One improved its rankings but lost visibility. One published nearly two thousand pages and almost nothing happened. Google did not reward the amount of content. It reacted to how clearly each site answered its subject and whether the pages gave people something worth choosing.

AISymantix Search Visibility Cluster

The clearest gain came from fixing subject ownership and building assets the other results did not have.

Impressions rose 85 percent. Weighted position improved by 26.42 places.

1 click ... weighted position 66.54 ... 8 visible pages
3 clicks ... weighted position 40.12 ... 23 visible pages

Google Search Console page impressions

AItoAIDatasets Connected Content Sprint

The pages moved closer to page one, but the cluster lost visibility and earned no click.

Weighted position improved by 25.36 places. Impressions fell 43 percent.

0 clicks ... weighted position 45.44 ... 4 visible pages
0 clicks ... weighted position 20.08 ... 6 visible pages

Google Search Console page impressions

RealSEOLife Real Estate SEO Directory

A large page count created almost no search response in the first complete current period.

One directory page appeared in Search Console. The other 1,972 URLs did not.

The new route did not exist
0 clicks ... weighted position 45.00 ... 1 visible page

Google Search Console page impressions

Context

Topical Authority: the starting conditions

This case started with the wrong story.

RealSEOLife's overall impressions fell. I called it a loss. Krisada called it normalization after an inflated run, and that was the better read.

So I threw out the sitewide conclusion and went back to the page groups with their own intervention dates. I wanted three different conditions: a focused topic campaign, a connected content sprint, and a very large directory build.

That changed the question from "Did the whole site go up?" to "What happened where we deliberately tried to build topical authority?"

Methodology

What changed in Topical Authority

The comparison uses Google Search Console page totals from the live Digital Karma Data Warehouse. Each site gets a complete twenty-eight-day period before its named intervention and the same current period from October 3 through October 30, 2026.

AISymantix begins with the September 7 search visibility campaign. That work consolidated four pages fighting over one subject, rebuilt the definition around a real formula, launched a working checker, and published first-party data.

AItoAIDatasets begins with the September 17 content sprint. That work gave AI datasets, SEO datasets, AI visibility datasets, marketplace questions, monetization, and the learning center clearer jobs.

RealSEOLife begins with the September 22 real estate directory rebuild. The new route did not exist in the earlier period, so zero is the honest starting number.

These are observations, not controlled experiments. The sites have different histories. AISymantix received later follow-up work, and the directory had less time to settle. Crawler requests were not used to prove human demand or search results.

Findings

What the Topical Authority results show

The focused campaign produced the cleanest gain.

AISymantix did more than add related pages. It fixed ownership, built the tool the subject called for, and published data another site could not copy. Visibility grew, average position improved, and clicks increased.

AItoAIDatasets is the middle answer. Its pages moved much closer to page one, but total impressions fell and clicks stayed at zero. The site got more precise without becoming a traffic win.

Then there is the directory.

RealSEOLife published 1,973 real estate SEO URLs. In the current period, one Delray Beach page appeared in Search Console. The build may still be early, but the size of the build did not buy topical authority.

That is the part worth keeping. Topical authority is not the reward for having the most pages. It is what can happen when a site gives one subject a clear owner, covers the connected questions, and adds something a reader could not get from another summary.

What We Kept

What Topical Authority teaches us

I still believe topical authority works.

I just believe the phrase gets used to excuse too much content.

The AISymantix result says focus, ownership, and original assets can move a subject. AItoAIDatasets says better positions do not automatically become more visibility or clicks. The RealSEOLife directory says volume is not a shortcut.

The next build should not ask how many pages belong in the cluster.

It should ask what the cluster owns that deserves to win.
