In the Real SEO Systems context, AI systems are the large language models and their crawlers, ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI surfaces, treated as a distinct audience that discovers, reads, and cites web pages alongside traditional search.

What it means in the system.

When I say I work with AI systems, I mean two related things.

First, the models themselves, ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, as tools I use to move faster through analysis, drafting, and pattern-finding across a lot of sites at once.

Second, and more important for SEO, the AI systems as an audience. Every one of them sends a crawler. GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended. Those bots fetch pages, and what they fetch shapes what the models can say and cite later.

Traditional SEO optimizes for one reader: Google's ranking system feeding a human. Real SEO Systems treats the AI crawlers as a second reader with its own behavior, its own access rules, and its own payoff. The server logs are where you actually watch that second reader show up.

The practical version: structured data, clean machine-readable endpoints, consistent terminology, and explicit crawler access in robots.txt stopped being nice-to-haves. They are how you get read by the systems that increasingly sit between your page and the person.

In Practice

Where it shows up.

On a normal content site now, AI crawler hits in the raw logs often arrive before Googlebot has fully re-crawled a new page. Watching GPTBot and ClaudeBot pick up a URL within a day of publish, while Search Console still shows nothing, is routine. It only shows up if you are reading the hosting logs, not just the Google side.

Worth Knowing

AI systems are not one thing. Each crawler has a different frequency, different rendering, and different rules for what it will fetch. Blocking one in robots.txt does not block the others, and being crawled is not the same as being cited.
