Structural Bias (SERP)

The degree to which a search result set systematically favors certain entity types regardless of on-page optimization by competitors, making displacement expensive relative to working within the available role allocation.
What it means in the system.
Structural bias, in the SERP sense, is the persistence of an entity-type preference in a result set even as competing pages improve their optimization. It's the reason a better-optimized page doesn't automatically displace an entrenched brand, reference source, or community-discussion result: the bias isn't in the page-level scoring, it's in which role Google is willing to assign to which kind of entity for that query class.
Structural bias is expensive to fight directly. It's not a content gap or a technical SEO gap that more optimization closes ... it's closer to a standing allocation. The practical response isn't to ignore it, and it isn't to spend indefinitely trying to out-optimize it. It's to identify which role is actually available to your entity type on a given query class, and compete for that role instead of an entrenched one.
Where it shows up.
An independent specialist site can spend months of link-building and content refreshes trying to out-rank a manufacturer's own page for a branded query, with limited success, because the manufacturer holds the brand role structurally. The same effort applied to claiming the specialist/independent-expertise role, which is often genuinely open, tends to produce results faster.
Structural bias should not be confused with an algorithmic penalty or a technical fault. It's a description of result-set composition, not a diagnosis of what's wrong with a competing page. Acknowledging it changes strategy, not because the page is bad, but because the objective it was aimed at may not have been available in the first place.
