Stops at the Pin

Also known as dead-end map record, unfollowable listing

Short Definition

A business that exists on a public map record with no website attached to it. A machine can confirm the place is there and then has nowhere to go next, so the business is findable and unreachable at the same time.

Definition

What it means in the system.

A map pin is a claim that something exists at a location. That is all it is.

When the record behind the pin carries a website, anything reading it can move from the pin to the business and learn what it does, who it serves and whether it is the right answer to somebody's question. When the record carries no website, the trail ends at the pin. The business stops at the pin.

This is not a design problem or a ranking problem. It is a reachability problem, and it happens one layer below anything most people think of as SEO.

The reason it matters more now than it did five years ago is who is reading. A person who hits a dead-end pin will often work around it, search the business name separately, ask somebody, drive past. A machine answering a question does not work around it. It moves to a record it can follow and answers with that one instead.

So a business that stops at the pin is not invisible to people. It is invisible to the systems people increasingly ask first.

In Practice

Where it shows up.

Across the four states in the Real SEO Life real estate directory, 969 real estate offices appear on the public map and 499 of them stop at the pin. In Bay County, Florida, all twelve mapped offices do. They are real businesses with staff and signs. An assistant asked to find an agent in Bay County can confirm twelve exist and cannot follow a single one of them anywhere.

Worth Knowing

Stopping at the pin does not mean a business has no website. It means the public record does not say where the website is, which is a different and much cheaper problem. The fix is usually one field in one record rather than a rebuild. It is also worth saying plainly that a record with a website is not automatically a good record. Being followable is the floor, not the finish line.
